Distributed Ledger Technology is an emerging technology, which provides the way to store and manage information in a distributed fashion. It enables the creation of decentralized crypto-currencies, smart contracts, eGovernance, supply chain management, eVoting etc over a network of computer systems without any human intervention. Unprecedented reliability and security over other cryptographic schemes has expanded the application domains of blockchain including financial services, real estate, stock exchange, identity management, supply chain, and Internet of Things.
The goal of this symposium is to provide a forum for researchers, business leaders and policy makers in this area to carefully analyse current systems or propose new solutions creating a scientific background for a solid development of innovative Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) applications.
This event is Co-located with the 20th International Conference on Formal Engineering Method (ICFEM2018).
The 1st Symposium on Distributed Ledger Technology was held on 13th June 2017 at Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia
The 2nd Symposium on Distributed Ledger Technology was held on 5th July 2018 at Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia
Dr Ingo Weber is a Principal Research Scientist & Team Leader of the Architecture & Analytics Platforms (AAP) team at Data61, CSIRO in Sydney. In addition he is a Conjoint Associate Professor at UNSW Australia and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Swinburne University. He has published around 100 refereed papers and two books. A third book, “Architecture for Blockchain Applications”, will be published by Springer in late 2018. The AAP team led by Dr Weber tackles major challenges around applications based on Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies, approaching the topic from the areas of software architecture and engineering, business process management, and dependability.
Title:Software Architecture, Engineering, and Business Process Management using Blockchain
Abstract:Blockchain is a novel distributed ledger technology, which has attracted a wide range of interests for building the next generation of applications in diverse areas such as supply chain transparency and safety, accounting, utilities, and the sharing economy. The broad range of applications is made possible by so-called smart contracts, which transform a blockchain system into a general compute platform. For this new paradigm and technology platform, we investigated its impact on software architecture and engineering practices. Our starting point for this investigation was the question what do architects and engineers need to know about blockchain to make good use of it? In this keynote, I will cover the main insights from this work. As such, the keynote will also offer a summary of our forthcoming book on this topic
Prof. Burkhard Stiller chairs the Communication Systems Group CSG, Department of Informatics IfI, University of Zürich UZH, Switzerland, since 2004. His main research interests are published in well over 250 research papers and include systems with a fully decentralized control (blockchains, clouds, peer-to-peer), network and service management (economic management), Internet-of-Things (security of constrained devices, LoRa), and telecommunication economics (charging and accounting).
Title:Blockchains and Their Applications – A Critical Review
Abstract: This talk will shed light on core technical characteristics of blockchains, while indicating the evolutionary approach undertaken and putting emphasis on the fact that the non-trusted stakeholder’s assumption combined with a full distribution of data elements was reached by investing heavily into cryptographic means, especially reflected in a high computational demand. Additionally, the talk raises the awareness that such distributed ledgers assume important prerequisites, which result in certain effects and impacts from which different applications can benefit, but at a cost to be named explicitly, too. While selected applications are briefly outlined and their systems as well as performance view are discussed, the trade-off between centralized and decentralized approaches and the balance of these trade-off decisions needs a much closer look at in the near future. Therefore, many projections of the usefulness of blockchains remain today slightly unrealistic or compromise the full decentralization again. As a consequence, this talk will conclude with selected and major challenges as well as measurable risks as of today.
